IMAPP MODIS Direct Broadcast Polar Inversion Depth and Inversion Strength Product Description ---------------------------------------------- -------------------------------------------------------------------------- The IMAPP Inversion software produces retrievals of inversion strength and inversion depth over the polar regions. The inputs to the software are the MODIS 1 km resolution L1B file and the MODIS 1 km Cloud Mask file. The software was developed by Yinghui Liu, and converted to C by Jerry Straka, under the directory of Dr. Jeffrey Key, NOAA/NESDIS and integrated into IMAPP by Kathleen Strabala, kathy.strabala@ssec.wisc.edu. For a description of the algorithm, please see: Liu, Y. and J. Key, 2003, Detection and analysis of clear sky, low-level atmospheric temperature inversions with MODIS, J. Atmos. Ocean. Tech., 20, 1727-1737. Output for this product is a flat binary file and an HDF4 file. ------------------- Binary Output Files ------------------- There are two binary output files associated with this software. The *inversion_strength.bin file contains 2 byte integer values scaled by .1 at 1 km resolution in degrees K. The size of the file will depend upon the size of the pass that is being processed (1354 x number_of_lines x 2 bytes). Example file name: a1.11194.0633.inversion_strength.bin Two byte integers Scale factor: 0.1 1 parameter - Inversion Strength Degrees K 1 km pixel resolution The *inversion_depth.bin file contains 2 byte integer values scaled by .1 at 1 km resolution in meters. The size of the file will depend upon the size of the pass that is being processed (1354 x number_of_lines x 2 bytes). Example file name: a1.11194.0633.inversion_depth.bin Two byte integers Scale factor: 0.1 1 parameter - Inversion Depth in meters (m) 1 km pixel resolution ------------------ HDF4 OUTPUT FILE ------------------ The HDF4 output file (*inversion.hdf) contains 4 arrays. Latitude, Longitude at 5 km resolution and Inversion Strength in degrees K and Inversion Depth in meters at 1 km resolution. Inversionn Strength and Inversion Depth arrays are stored as 2 Byte Integers, and can be converted to actual values by multiplying by the scale factor of 0.1. The Latitude and Longitude arrays are stored as 4 byte float values at 5 km resolution. Example filename: a1.11194.1737.inversion.hdf (Example ncdump -h of an IMAPP Inversion HDF file) netcdf a1.11194.1737.inversion.hdf { dimensions: Cell_Along_Swath_5km = 896 ; Cell_Across_Swath_5km = 271 ; Cell_Along_Swath_1km = 4480 ; Cell_Across_Swath_1km = 1354 ; variables: float Latitude(Cell_Along_Swath_5km, Cell_Across_Swath_5km) ; Latitude:_FillValue = -999.98999f ; float Longitude(Cell_Along_Swath_5km, Cell_Across_Swath_5km) ; Longitude:_FillValue = -999.98999f ; short Inversion_Depth(Cell_Along_Swath_1km, Cell_Across_Swath_1km) ; Inversion_Depth:units = "m" ; Inversion_Depth:scale_factor = 0.1 ; Inversion_Depth:add_offset = 0. ; Inversion_Depth:valid_range = 0s, 20000s ; Inversion_Depth:_FillValue = -10s ; short Inversion_Strength(Cell_Along_Swath_1km, Cell_Across_Swath_1km) ; Inversion_Strength:units = "C" ; Inversion_Strength:scale_factor = 0.1 ; Inversion_Strength:add_offset = 0. ; Inversion_Strength:valid_range = 0s, 1000s ; Inversion_Strength:_FillValue = -10s ; }
